From Dreams to Reality: Our Home Renovation Journey

Home renovations often begin with grand dreams, fueled by hours of watching HGTV and pinning countless "dream house" ideas on Pinterest. I, too, had big plans for transforming our house into the perfect living space I had envisioned. I imagined knocking down walls, relocating bathrooms and closets, and painting every inch of the walls and ceilings. However, reality soon set in as I grappled with my limited construction knowledge, time constraints, the constraints of our home, and the limitations of our bank account. My ambitious dream wasn't feasible, so I had to find a balance between my vision and what was practical. In the end, the compromises I made left me feeling extremely happy with the results. The Flooring Dilemma

When we first purchased our house, it was clear that a major renovation was in order. The biggest challenge was the mishmash of four different types of flooring scattered throughout the house. The kitchen boasted dark brown, wide-plank hardwoods, while the dining room, hallway, and one bedroom featured thin-plank, light tan hardwoods. In contrast, the living room, den, and another bedroom were covered in carpet. To complicate matters further, the entry hallway, bathrooms, and laundry room were all tiled. None of these floors matched or complemented each other, and it was clear that a change was necessary.

To make matters worse, we discovered a major issue when we decided to rip up the carpet. The subfloor underneath was rotting away due to a leaking backdoor. The project suddenly became a mess, and we knew it was time to take action.

The Cozy Breakfast Nook

One of my personal favorite additions to the house was transforming the unused breakfast nook into a cozy corner with built-in storage. It was an awkward space with wonderful windows that deserved to be put to good use. I made some bold color choices in this area, which I adored. However, as we considered selling the house, I began to worry that my unique taste might not appeal to potential buyers, potentially causing a challenge in the selling process. The only thing I didn't manage to get around to was painting the walls or tackling any major structural changes.

A Labor of Love

Despite the challenges we faced, I couldn't be happier with how our home renovation turned out. Much of the labor was carried out by my husband, who skillfully built the beautiful built-ins in the breakfast nook. Meanwhile, I honed my painting skills and made crucial design decisions. As we prepared to leave our beloved home, we walked through it one last time, caught between sadness at not being able to enjoy it longer and happiness knowing that someone else appreciated the changes we had made.

Our house was listed on a Friday afternoon, and to our amazement, we received our first offer that same night. Over the weekend, we had a staggering 15 showings, a three-hour open house, and a total of ten offers by Sunday night. Within 48 hours, we had essentially sold the house after accepting an unbeatable offer over dinner with our realtor. The best part of the story is that we sold our home for nearly $100,000 more than what we purchased it for just three years earlier.
